How much tax are you paying?

Here’s a hint: it’s probably not enough!

I hear a lot of early-stage business owners, especially one-man-bands, talking about how they hate paying tax. And the trouble with that is, if we consistently tell the universe that we don’t want to pay tax, and the law says we get to pay taxes on our revenues, what that translates into is: “Universe, please make sure I don’t have too much revenue!” And the Universe obediently serves up exactly what we consistently ask for.

Now here’s the thing – paying lots of tax means you are earning lots of revenue. That’s a good thing. One of the things we do in a structured society is to contribute to the whole thing running (sort of) OK. And when what we do to get to pay that tax is something we actually enjoy, I think that’s kind of cool – you get to contribute to society in three ways: with the value we add through our work, with the joy we add to the world from using our Joyful Genius, and with the taxes we get to pay!

So go on, stop complaining, and start loving your contribution.
