Is your business serving you?

Or are you stuck in service to your business?

So often when we set out to create our own business, we have a dream of taking control of our own lives, choosing what work we do and the hours that we work.  And then “reality” sets in, and we end up working all the hours there are, and feeling that we have to take whatever work anyone will pay us for, just to pay the bills.  We begin to feel that all our time is being taken up doing things for our business, not the other way around.

What if we didn’t have to buy into that version of reality?  What if it really was possible to choose how many hours we work, and to make a choice about the work that we are willing to do – and still get properly paid for it?  I firmly believe that is possible for our business to serve us – it genuinely is a reality that we can choose.

So what do you need to do, so that your business can serve you?  Well, before we get into any of the pragmatic business stuff, there are two critical steps that will determine your level of success:

The first and most important thing is to truly understand what you want your business to contribute to you.  And for that to happen, you need to truly understand what is important to you – your core values (if you are not 100% clear on yours, here’s an exercise that will help you:

And then you need to hold a clear and compelling vision of what your life and work will be like when you are successful. I generally suggest creating a detailed mind-movie of your life in 5 or 10 years’ time – covering everything from where you live to who you hang out with, and even down to what you have for breakfast on your perfect day (and with whom, and where – by the pool, maybe?).  Here’s an exercise you can do, taken from my “Unleash Your Genius” home study course: Your Vision (I’ve opened up this module specially for you).

If you don’t really know what you want, it will be very hard to decide what work will help your business to get it for you.  As a wise man once said: if you don’t know your destination, any direction will do.  And that can easily result in going round in circles – lots of activity but precious little actual progress.  Busy-ness, not real Business.

And armed with these two bits of self-knowledge you can start to make choices that lead to your business providing what you want from it.  Instead of you working feverishly to meet the demands of your frustrating business, you get your fulfilling business resonating completely to deliver the desires of your deepest self.
