I’m often asked how to get paid for having fun. After all, that’s what Joyful Genius is all about isn’t it – love what you do for a living, make a great living doing what you love!
I was talking about this in the latest Joyful Genius Live, and here’s the basics:
The #1 secret of how to get paid for having fun
Love what you do for a living.
That’s it. It really is that simple. Not always easy – but very, very simple!
Now, that might sound a bit similar to that famous old saying: “Just do what you love and the money will come” (or I should say, that load of old cobblers!) But it isn’t the same thing at all.
And here’s the difference: it’s not all about you!
You get paid for adding value
That nonsense old saying has got it the wrong way round. It’s saying the trick is to put doing what you love ahead of anything else. That’s all about you, and what you want to do. It totally ignores what the people you’re here to serve are looking for from you. The real secret is not to do what you love, but to love what you do.
Prioritise what you can do better than anyone else, and learn to find the joy in it. That creates fantastic results for the people you work with, and that makes getting paid to have fun a doddle.
And let’s be honest, it’s not exactly a chore, is it? We all love to be good at things, so finding the joy in something you’re exquisite at should be pretty easy, really.
Great results that are fun to get
When you love doing the work that people want to pay you for, that creates a positive feedback loop. The positive energy you bring to work you choose to enjoy makes you more fun to work with. This means people are more likely to engage you, and to refer you to their friends.
When clients see you bringing joy to your work, and enthusing about all the cool ways you can help them, that brings the added bonus that they’ll respect your expertise more. So as well as enjoying the work, you’ll be treated better.
In fact, being enthusiastic about your work is tip #4 in my How To Attract Your Perfect Customers e-book that I wrote a few years ago. Click on the title to download it.
So my tip for you today is this: focus on the value you add, and choose to find the joy in your genius.
In short: love what you do for a living, make a great living doing what you love!
