I often talk about why you forget to be brilliant. There are two sides to it: the bits you don’t forget, and the bits you do. Let me explain.
Remembering to forget
I often describe your Core Process as how you show up in the world when you forget to pretend to be who you think they ought to think you ought to be. Whoever “they” are!
We all have a particular way of being that allows you to create magic in the world. It appears when you are completely relaxed in your work. It’s not necessarily that the work is easy for you when you’re in that place of genius. But it does come to you with an ease and grace that lets you know it’s you at your best.
What keeps you away from that place of grace is thinking you’re supposed to fit somebody else’s idea of who you are. Or to be precise, who they would like you to be.
Courses can make you forget to be brilliant
A big cause of tying yourself up in knots about who you’re supposed to be is all those courses you’ve done. You buy into all the bullshit about you have to be this way or that in order to be successful. And every guru has their own version that they’ll tell you is “the secret to success”.
As I’ve written before, what has worked for your favourite guru won’t necessarily be right for you. But you try it anyway – after all, it worked for them, right? So you end up doing stuff that’s not really you at your best. It’s just not aligned with the essence of your genius. Sometimes it’s even stuff that actively stops you showing up in your Core Process.
So now you’ve got this pretend version of you, that’s a real effort for you to keep showing up as. You have to keep remembering what it was that you’re supposed to do and be. That’s hard work – and it isn’t even what your ideal customers want from you anyway!
Your genius is what comes through when you stop pretending. When you forget to pretend to be someone you’re not. That’s why it has such a feeling of ease and grace.
Forgetting to remember
So that’s, if you like, the good form of forgetting. But there is also a kind of forgetting that it is better to avoid. Forgetting to be brilliant.
Everyone has times when it’s just been crystal clear that you’re brilliant. I come across those all the time, when I’m guiding people to discover their Core Process. We all have them.
And we also have a silly habit of forgetting them, just because you got a bit side-tracked. When you end up doing work that doesn’t really allow you to be in your Core Process. At those times it can be easy to slip into thinking of yourself as just average. Or maybe even not very good. Humans are very good at that one!
And it is entirely possible that at those times, you really are just average. Maybe even rubbish at it. But that’s just because you’re not getting the chance to be in your genius. Everyone has things they’re not very good at. It’s just that way too many people end up doing that stuff for a living.
Except it’s not really a living. It’s just a wage. Living involves bringing all of you to the party. Yes, to the party – in my world, work is supposed to be a bit of a party. Somewhere you go to enjoy yourself and to shine. If that’s not your current experience of your work, maybe it’s time to change something?
How to remember to be brilliant
A big reason why you forget to be brilliant is that you don’t spend enough time remembering when you were at your best. Once of the most joyful elements of a session to discover your Core Process is telling the stories of magical times from your life.
Out of that comes the core theme of you at your best. The thing that you’re doing, the way that you’re BEing, when you’ve been alive and alight and creating wonderful magic in the world.
So a very simple thing you can do to access your genius is to treat yourself to some time to think about times you were brilliant. No analysis, no overthinking, you don’t even need to try to work out what your thing is.
Just remember those moments and relish the delicious energy of them.
That’s it.
To remember to be brilliant, allow yourself to remember when you were brilliant!
