There are many paths to success, but not all of them are going to be right for you. We are all different, and that’s what makes us special. And because you’re special, you are going to have your own special way to be successful in what you choose to do for a living.
Don’t just follow the crowd!
The Busy-ness of Doing
Way too many self-help material tells you to focus on all the things you’d love to have, then work out what you need to do to get them.
That’s sort of good advice – having your ideal life will indeed require you to identify your desires, and then make a plan to achieve them. But it fails on one important point: it’s all about Having and Doing, and it totally ignores who you are going to show up as.
Focus on BEing
While some success literature focuses on what you need to Do, more sophisticated works realise that it’s not what you do that matters, it’s who you are authentically Being. The way you show up in the world makes a much greater difference than trying to force yourself to do what’s necessary to follow someone else’s strategies.
You are not like all other people (actually, most of my clients aren’t like *many* other people, but that’s another point altogether!) – and that means that tactics and strategies that seem easy for other people to follow can be a total mystery to you.
Twisting the real you
The trouble with focusing on the stuff you’re “supposed” to DO to achieve success is that you are going to end up distorting your unique essence, in order to get better at the stuff that your latest guru says is ‘The Answer’. And you are going to end up losing sight of what your ideal clients really love about you – YOUR ‘secret sauce’.
We’ve all had that experience where you read something that someone has written, or maybe you’ve heard them say something, and thought: “That’s not the real you talking!”
That’s what happens when you twist your authentic self to fit someone else’s path to success.
Be yourself, not who somebody else thinks you should be!
