I’m often asked “How do you get live your Joyful Genius”? In this post, I’m going to talk about the difference between your genius – the things that you are really, really good at – and your JOYFUL genius. There’s a big difference. And it’s when you get into your Joyful Genius that life really starts to go well.
Identify your Genius
I often talk about what people ask you to do being a good indication of what your genius is.
And that is very true. If people are asking you to do something, then there’s a very good chance that your genius is in there somewhere.
Because typically, when people ask you to do things that they know you can do well, they’re doing that because there’s something about you that’s radiating: This is something I’m good at. This is me at my best.
It is not necessarily about the thing that you do. It’s more about the way that you do it, that’s different than the way other people do it. That’s what makes you their perfect provider.
Who are you in your Genius?
And it goes a little bit deeper than that. It’s not how you do it. But it’s who you’re being when you’re doing it.
It really is about understanding the how of what you do. We’re not talking here about the ABC steps, the actions you take. I’m talking about the energy you’re bringing to it. Who you’re BEing when you’re in your Genius. And when you’re being you at your best, that’s the time when people really get the most value from working with you.
And that’s the time when your perfect customers really love to work with you. When you’re really being you at your best.
If people aren’t really getting value from that, what that means is they’re not your perfect customers. Your perfect customers are going to appreciate you in your natural genius that shines through.
How to live your Joyful Genius
And one of the reasons your genius shines through is because you’re enjoying what you do. And that’s where we have that extra step, that subset if you like, of what people love you to do, and the way that they love that you do it. That subset of the things you’re brilliant at, and those are the ones you actually love to do.
In my model of Joyful Genius, these are the things you are good at, you can get paid for, AND you love doing them.
There are all sorts of things that people ask me to do. And that I do in my unique way – with a cheeky smile, with a bit of challenge.
But they are things that I don’t necessarily actually enjoy doing. It’s not that I actively dislike doing them. It’s that it doesn’t actively bring me joy to do them. There’s a subtle difference there.
So what are the things that you absolutely love doing, that other people love you doing, in the way that you love to do it?
It’s not about what they want from you. It’s about what you want to deliver. What do you want them to see as your Joyful Genius?
(in the video this post is based on, I jumbled my words, and that came out as your Joy-nius – I rather like that!)
Really what we’re talking about here is this:
Who do you love to show up as, what’s the energy you love to show up in, that allows you to do the functional stuff of what you do as your genius in such a brilliant way that it’s perfect for your perfect customers. Who do you show up as when you’re just being you in your natural, joyful being.
That’s when you get to live in your Joyful Genius.
A higher self?
Let’s start from the premise that we are all beings of infinite light and joy and we’ve chosen to have this human experience this time around.
If you are not feeling that joy, that feeling of being an infinite being of light and joy when you’re doing your work, that means you’re not bringing the true essence of you to your work. You’re allowing who you think they want you to be, to just slightly twist who you naturally are.
You don’t want to be distorting the essence of you to fit what you think other people want. As I’ve said many times before, the chances are, it’s not actually what they want. If you think they want it, and you’re trying to be it, you’re not being what they really want.
I’ll say that again. If you think there’s something that your perfect customers want you to be, and you’re trying to be it, then you are not in your Joyful Genius.
The reason I can say that with such certainty is this: you don’t have to try to be in your Joyful Genius. It comes naturally to you!
The secret to living your Joyful Genius
The trick is to find the people who love what you do naturally. That’s where the marketing comes in, to get a message out there that communicates to people what you show up as when you’re being that infinite being of light and joy. So that the ones who are going to fall in love with that will find you.
But the first step is to know yourself what the essence of you in your joy looks like. And then you can attract the people who would love to work with that.
That’s you in your joyful genius. That’s what I want, for the world to be working like that. Wouldn’t it be a sweet world if everybody was working in their Joyful Genius all the time?
Imagine if everyone was just having great fun doing the stuff they do brilliantly and naturally, that other people love them doing for them?
That’s my perfect world.
