In this article, I want to talk about what you’re here for. It’s based on the latest Joyful Genius Live video on my Facebook Page
There’s a job that you’re here on the planet to do. You’re the only one who really can do it, and when you’re doing it, it represents you at your absolute best.
So how are you going to work out what you’re here for?
Discovering what you’re here for
In my Inspired Business Blueprint I have what I call the purpose WISH list. As you’d expect from me, it’s an acronym:
World
What kind of world do you want to live in? More importantly, What kind of world do you want to be part of creating?
That’s the important thing here, what kind of world would you love to be a part of and what can you contribute to making that happen?
You can gift yourself some quiet time to take yourself forward into that world, and ask yourself some questions about it.
Ask yourself what can you see happening in that world that isn’t happening right now? And what’s not happening in that perfect world that you’d love not to be happening in today’s world?
And what could you do about either of those? What are you here to make happen?
Irritation
What really winds you up?
The things that irritate you are a good indication of what you’re on the planet to deal with. Because if it isn’t important enough to you for you to be irritated about it then it’s probably not your job to fix it.
But if it does irritate you then I’m afraid you probably have a role to play in getting that sorted. It gets under your skin because you have something in you that means that you can do something about it.
So do be careful about what you’re allowing to irritate you!
I started to understand what I’m here to do when I realised quite how much it winds me up when people say things like: “You’ve just got to knuckle down, because work’s not supposed to be fun.”
Oh, that so annoys me!
Work is supposed to be enjoyable and if you’re not having fun in your work, you’re not doing the best work. I want you to find the work that is a joy for you, and to get out there and do that with joy and with genius.
Scope of what you’re here for
How big a canvas do you want to be making your difference on?
Is it something that you’re changing for yourself? Maybe that’s all you’re here to do, to learn so that for the next iteration you’ll be starting with more tools. Or maybe it’s about making a better life and a better world for your family, or perhaps your community.
Or perhaps you want to operate at a national level, a global level, or change the whole universe?
Any of those is okay. Greatness doesn’t only come from having a big ambition. If your purpose is to keep you and your family in a great life, then achieving that is a win.
Equally, there is nothing wrong with having massive ambitions to completely change the way the world works.
I think I’d probably sit somewhere between those two. I’m aiming to be making a difference internationally but to the very specific community of people who’ve made a conscious decision to be a single person business.
You might have various resources that you pull in from elsewhere, but my people choose to operate as solo practitioners. Healers, coaches, therapists, consultants – people who help others. You are people with specific expertise who can do things differently to the norm.
People with a special genius, I guess!
I love for people like you to believe you can bring your whole self to your work. My joy is to facilitate you bringing the magnificence that is you to your work and to the world. I’d love for you to make your difference.
Higher self
This is about making sure that what you’re doing in the world is coming from the very best you possible.
I make a distinction between knowledge (the facts that you know) and knowing (stuff that is just in there and you know it at a core level. Working from your higher self, you’re contributing to something far bigger than you and it comes from that place of intuition and of just knowing what you’re here to do.
A great way to get to that place of knowing is a tool that I call Cartesian Consequences. There are four questions you ask yourself:
- What will happen if I do this? (in this case, what you’re here to do)
- What will happen if I don’t do this?
- What will happen if I don’t do this?
- What won’t happen if I don’t do this?
So for me what will happen if I do is that solo practitioners will get to have much nicer lives and the world will get to experience their genius. So we’ll end up with a far better world.
What will happen if I don’t? Well a lot of very talented solo practitioners are going to go bust and end up going back into jobs that make them unhappy.
What won’t happen if I do? Well, what I’m here to do is for the world to experience all of the richness that the human race has to offer. If I do what I’m here to do, the world won’t miss out on all that.
And what won’t happen if I don’t is that the world won’t get to experience all you solo practitioner geniuses in your full glory.
The beauty of this tool is it gets you looking at what you’re here for from slightly different angles, and I found that really clarified things for me.
BEing, not DOing
Discovering what you’re here to do is not about the functions of what you do. It’s not the doing. It’s who you’re showing up as.
The way I get to this with my clients is an approach called Core Process (part of the Core Being programme). Your Core Process runs through every aspect of your life and it’s you at your very best.
No matter what activity you’re doing, your Core Process is there. So whether you’re being an accountant or a football player your Core Process still runs through it.
Now I’m neither an accountant nor (very definitely) a football player, but my core process is En-couraging Potential. It doesn’t matter whether I’m being a coach, a consultant, a mentor – or whether I’m being even just a friend down the pub.
When I’m at my best I am En-couraging people’s Potential. Helping them find the confidence and courage to step up and live to their full potential.
You might not be clear what that might be for you, what you at your very best really is. If you’re in that place where you Knowing there’s something you’re supposed to be doing but you can’t quite figure out what it is can leave you feeling a bit flat. Like you’ve kind of lost your ‘mojo’.
If that’s you, and you’d love to figure out you at your best, to discover the work you’re here to do, the job you’re here on the planet to do, you need to watch the video in the link at the bottom.
Because I’d love to see you at your very best.
And so would the world.
